What Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a chronic infection of the gums and bone surrounding your teeth. It usually starts with plaque buildup and inflamed gums (gingivitis) but can progress into deeper infection and inflammation, bone loss, and tooth mobility.

There are two major stages:

Gingivitis

Reversible gum inflammation caused by plaque buildup. Gums may bleed when brushing or flossing.

Periodontitis

An advanced stage where the infection damages bone and gum tissue around the teeth. Teeth may loosen or shift, and bone loss becomes permanent without treatment.

Depending on your needs, your treatment may include:

An icon depicting a tooth being brushed, representing dental hygiene or cleaning, potentially in the context of dental implants.

Deep Cleaning (Scaling & Root Planing)

Removes plaque, tartar, and bacteria beneath the gum line. Smooths root surfaces to promote healing and prevent reinfection.

Laser Therapy (LANAP® or LAPIP®)

Advanced laser techniques remove infected tissue, kill bacteria, and stimulate natural healing — often without cutting or stitches.
