What Is Osseous Surgery?

Osseous surgery—sometimes called pocket reduction surgery—is a periodontal procedure used to treat advanced gum disease (periodontitis). When deep pockets form between your teeth and gums, bacteria collects below the surface and causes bone loss, loose teeth, and chronic infection.

Osseous surgery removes this infection, reshapes the bone, and gives your gums a chance to heal and reattach—preserving your teeth and restoring stability.

When Is It Needed?

You may be a candidate for osseous surgery if:

  • You have deep gum pockets that don’t improve with cleanings or scaling
  • Your gums bleed frequently and pull away from the teeth
  • You’ve had bone loss on X-rays or loose-feeling teeth
  • You have chronic bad breath, swelling, or pus around teeth

Left untreated, advanced gum disease can lead to tooth loss and impact overall health.

Pocket Cleaning and Tissue Removal

Bone Reshaping

Uneven or damaged bone around the tooth is smoothed to eliminate hiding places for bacteria and help the gum tissue reattach securely.

Gum Repositioning and Closure

The gums are sutured in a way that reduces pocket depth and promotes long-term healing.
