FAQs

Virtually all patients that are missing a full upper or lower set of teeth are candidates for traditional (complete) dentures. Patients missing only some of their teeth can also be treated with partial dentures and by coming to see us for an evaluation, we can advise on which steps are right for you.

On average, dentures last 7-10 years with proper home care and maintenance. As the underlying bone below the gum tissue can change over time, we recommend a reline (or rebase) of your dentures every 2-3 years to maximize comfort and retention.

Dentures should be cleaned daily with a soft bristled toothbrush or cloth using denture cleaner or hand soap. Dentures should not be cleaned with a firm-bristled toothbrush or conventional toothpaste. Taking dentures out to sleep allows your gum tissue to stay healthy while soaking the dentures in water overnight will help maintain the integrity of the dentures.

Normally, upper dentures do not require adhesive as the roof of the mouth provides excellent suction. Lower dentures commonly feel “more snug” to patients that use adhesive, but well-fitting dentures should only require a small amount of adhesive applied once per day to achieve this.

Depending on the amount of teeth requiring extraction, you can have a minor amount of discomfort for the first 2-3 weeks following surgery and fitting of your dentures. For patients that are already missing all of their teeth, no pain is to be expected during the process.

Yes, if you elect to have dentures, you can still choose in most cases to have implants placed at a future date. Do be aware, however, that long-term denture wear can result in the underlying bone slowly being resorbed over time. Implants with fixed teeth will prevent this issue.
